October 2003: Hiking San Jacinto and San Diego wildfires

Check box, if you don't want to see comments when enjoying full-size pictures.

In the first week of October 2003 I hiked with the San Diego Hiking Club from the mountain station of Palm Springs' Aerial Tramway to San Jacinto Peak.

Starting at 8516 feet above sea level, we had to hike up 2300 feet to the summit. We were surrounded by magnificent pine trees, at least one coyote, and a stunning mountain scenery. It was one of the best hikes I've ever been on in Southern California, and I can truly recommend it. Below are some impressions.

In the last week of October, the hinterland of San Diego suffered the largest wildfire in the modern history of the State of California. The "Paradise" and "Cedar" fires claimed a total of 330,000 acre (that is an area of about 25x50 km), almost 2500 residences, and 16 lives. The Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, which has been the venue of several Updaters, was completely destroyed, and is still closed as of this writing. Since I'm living close to the coast, I was not in danger at any time. On three days, the smog was so dense that it was possible to look at the Sun without protection.
