September 2006: Stockholm, Sweden
|
| I traveled to Stockholm in September for attending a conference on UV radiation and clouds. Since I arrived early on a Sunday morning, I had a full day for exploring this wonderful medieval town, which is sometimes called "Venice of the North." It is built on many islands, which are connected by bridges and ferries. I was lucky and picked a warm day with blue skies. I enjoyed the beauty of "Gamla Stan," the oldest part of the city, visited stunning museums (with the Vasa Museum leading the pack), and chatted with friendly people.

| Vasa Museum The Vasa Museum houses the Vasa, a royal warship, which capsized in 1628 during its maiden voyage. After having spent more than 300 years at the bottom of Stockholm's harbor, it was rediscovered in 1956, salvaged, and sprayed with polyethylenglycol for several years to preserve the wood. The size of the ship and its many ornaments are just breathtaking.
