February 2007: Lake Louise, Canada, and Ferguson Lake, California

February 2007 saw two highlights: Skiing at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies and a hiking trip to Ferguson Lake, located at the border between California and Arizona. More is below.

Lake Louise

A friend of mine attended a conference at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, located near Banff in the Canadian Rockies. I visited him during a weekend in February and we went skiing at the close-by Lake Louise Mountain Resort. The whole trip was prohibitively expensive, and a colleague later asked me whether I'm a now rock star. But hey, we all live only once, and the trip left memories for a lifetime. For one, skiing was awesome, particularly on the first day, which featured blue skies and some untracked snow (no photos, sorry). Also the stay at the Chateau and the fondue at the Walliser Stube was quite memorable. Below is a shot of me, jumping over the "Paradise Cornice."

Ferguson Lake

The weekend after the trip to Canada, I drove with several friends to Ferguson Lake, a bulge of the Colorado River north of Yuma. We were camping next to the lake's shore and hiking in the Little Picacho Wilderness. It was a desolate place but had its own beauty. Much of the landscape looked like piles of dirt with almost no vegetation. But we also found a neat slot canyon, which was lined with interesting looking layered rocks.
